ENGLAND WORLD CUP DREAM TEAM

What would be the best England World Cup team of all time? Here's our pick. Who would you replace and who would you put in the team instead? Let us know in the comments!

Goalkeeper
Peter Shilton

Shilton is the most capped England football player of all time, earning 125 caps, and he also holds the record of the most competitive appearances in world football. He played an important role in the England World Cup Team in Italia '90, when England finished in fourth place.

Right-Back
Gary Neville

Neville won everything at the domestic level, and he earns his place in this team for his fantastic ability to set-up goals and for his ability to link-up very well with the right midfielder playing alongside him, usually David Beckham.

Left-Back
Stuart Pearce

Pearce was a hard-tackling ferocious defender, and he had great shot-technique and could hit the ball with power and accuracy.

Centre Back
Rio Ferdinand

Another player who won it all domestically with Manchester United, Rio Ferdinand was a calm and composed defender for England who was always comfortable on the ball, and was good at passing the ball out of defence rather than aimlessly thumping it up the pitch.

Centre Back
Tony Adams

Adams is considered one of the greatest Arsenal players of all time by the clubs own fans, and he was the type of player you would not want to play against. Despite having to endure the hardships of alcoholism throughout his career, Adams was a fantastic old-school England centre back who you could rely on when he was fit and ready to play.

Right Winger
David Beckham

Beckham had the greatest pass and free-kick of any England player ever. He wasn't just marketing gold, he was also a fantastic player and a true professional, on and off the pitch.

Left Winger
Chris Waddle

England have infamously always had trouble filling this position, so we decided to stick Chris Waddle in here. However his trademark was to cut in from the right side onto his cultured left foot to strike on goal. Unusually for an England player though, Waddle was adaptable and I am sure he would still be an effective left sided midfielder for this England World Cup dream team.

Centre Midfielder
Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard is Chelsea's all time-team leading goalscorer. This is a stunning achievement. Unfortunately for Lampard, England managers have never found a way to utilise Lampard effectively in their team. Other competitors for this position include Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard, but the truth is that these players do not compare to one of the greatest midfield players of his generation. Lampard could have easily moved to Spain or Italy and dominated those leagues, the same cannot be said of Scholes or Gerrard.

Centre Midfielder
Bobby Charlton

The only player from the 1966 World Cup (the only time England won the World Cup, under controversial circumstances), Charlton had a great left foot. However, football was very different when Charlton played, and it would be interesting to see if he would be nearly as effective in the modern game.

Striker
Alan Shearer

The one thing about Alan Shearer everyone knows is that he loved to score goals. That was his life. And he scored every kind of goal, from the mundane to the spectacular. It would be impossible to leave the Premiership's all-time leading goalscorer off this list.

Striker
Michael Owen

Despite being under-used at the domestic level by both Alex Ferguson and Tony Pulis towards the end of his playing career, the fact is is that England may never produced a natural finisher as good as Michael Owen ever again. Owen, the winner of the 2001 Ballon d'Or, scored one of the greatest World Cup goals of all-time in 1998 versus Argentina, and despite being under-appreciated in England he is hailed as a legend around the world, especially in Spain after his superb display in the El-Classico when he helped Real Madrid crush Barcelona.
